How To Identify The Right Lipstick Shade For You

Identifying the right lipstick shade for your skin tone

One of the most challenging choices to make is choosing the right lipstick shade for your skin tone. While shopping in a sea of beautiful lipstick shades, unfortunately, not all shades will compliment your skin tone. Finding the right lipstick shade is one of the biggest dilemmas for women, especially if you are not a professional makeup artist.

There are so many lipstick shades, undertones, and consistencies to choose from. Having these many factors to consider can dampen the fun when shopping for lipsticks, making it a chore instead of a fun experience. Don’t get it wrong; makeup artists don’t have it all laid out, though. It just gets easier with practice and consistency, allowing us to recognize what works best from so many trials and errors.

Then again, when there are so many hues of reds, nudes, and pinks, to choose from, how do you know the right lipstick shade that suits your skin tone best? I am here to provide answers to this daunting issue.

Choosing The Right Lipstick Shade

When shopping for the right shade of lipstick, you need to consider your skin’s undertone first. Another handy method is to make use of a lipstick skin tone chart when shopping. Rightly identifying your skin’s undertone can also help you pick the right foundation shade too.

The majority of people fall into either the first two categories;

Warm undertone

Cool undertone

If you do not belong to either of these they you must have a

Neutral undertone

So, how do you identify your skin undertone?

For cool undertones, you will have fairer skin. Your skin will have a red, pink, or bluish hue. Another great way is to look at the color of your veins in your wrist, which will look blue. Also, if silver jewelry complements your skin well, and if you tend to get sunburned easily.

The best lipsticks for this undertone have a blue or purple shaded undertone. Think more or a cherry red, or a red lipstick that is bluish-red instead of the more orange tones. You can go for more natural nudes like beige, pink nude, and so on. If you are still not sure, you can opt out for a tinted balm instead, this will help to hydrate your lips too.

Warm undertones tend to have a more golden or olive hue. Using the vein test again, your veins’ color in your wrist will look green, and gold jewelry suits your skin tone. You also don’t get sunburned so easily. The right lipstick shades remain warm shades for this skin undertone.

Go for bold colors like brick red, deep browns, bold oranges, and so on. As for nudes, keep in mind the general rule: for lighter skin, go for paler nudes, while for warmer skin, go for more rich nude shades. I see a lot of women making this mistake by choosing the wrong nude shade. If you are much darker, then a darker shade of nude will suit you better and not a paler shade.

Finally, the neutral skin tone. You have a neutral skin tone if you have a mix of yellow and pink in your skin’s base. Silver and gold jewelry suits you, and luckily so do most lipstick shades as well. You don’t need to be too concerned about looking awkward on some lipstick colors.
